This year, Tacoma Loyal and Underground Sound proudly collaborated with Art on the Ave and the Sixth Avenue Business District to select our August cover artist.
We asked artists to submit a piece that visually expressed the energy, creativity and community spirit of the Ave, in either a literal or abstract interpretation.
From an inspiring collection of submissions, we selected one piece to become the cover of the August 2026 issue of Underground Sound.
We are honored to introduce our 2026 Cover Artist, Ashley Laufer, along with our Featured Artists, Sherrie “Voxx” Johnson and Kcie Monk, whose artwork beautifully captures the imagination, diversity, and creative spirit that make this community so special.
The collaboration extends beyond the pages of the zine. Each artist’s work has been transformed into a collection of wearable art, with select designs now available as t-shirts and tank tops through Market Loyal.

“My submission, Standing out in the Crowd is an example of art as a form of therapy to reconnect.
I wanted to loosen up and head back to a studying state of mind, so I began my series: Single line Portraits - A creative exercise involving gesture, intuition and intention, drawn with one line.
The people of my gestures could be anyone. The human face is familiar yet a portrait can be more profound to those who know the subject. Sometimes, a little less detail can help the viewer connect in their own way.

On the Ave, inspired by fantasy, whimsy, and the vibrant energy of the annual festival, Kcie’s playful illustration captures the feeling of wandering down 6th Avenue surrounded by music, murals, local businesses, and artistic expression.
Filled with colorful details and hidden discoveries, the artwork invites viewers to slow down, explore, and experience the neighborhood with childlike curiosity.
Sherrie "Voxx” Johnson
FEATURED ARTIST
Cosmic Bloom, inspired by sacred geometry, nature, galaxies, flowers, roots, rivers, and the repeating patterns that connect us all, this striking design reflects Sherrie’s belief that we are each unique while remaining part of something much greater.
Her work invites curiosity, contemplation, and a sense of wonder—encouraging us to pause, look a little closer, and appreciate the beauty woven throughout the natural world.
