Mark Monlux is a Tacoma-based illustrator, artist and creative professional whose career spans more than four decades and thousands of projects. From commercial illustration and design to movie-inspired art, public works and graphic recording, Mark brings an unmistakable sense of curiosity and play to everything he creates.
A longtime champion of Tacoma’s creative community, he’s also the founder of CLAW—the Cartoonists’ League of Absurd Washingtonians—and host of the weekly Freelance Fandango, bringing fellow creatives together to share ideas, inspiration and a little absurdity.

The Creature
Created for Underground Sound’s October cover, Mark Monlux’s The Creature pays homage to one of classic horror’s most iconic monsters through his distinctive illustrative hand.
Originally conceived in a more traditional approach, the piece transformed when Mark experimented with reversing the image against black. The result is bold, graphic and wonderfully eerie—every scale, wrinkle and shadow emerging in stark white, surrounded by bubbles and tiny hidden details that reward a closer look.
A lifelong lover of movies, monsters and the unconventional, Mark brought all three together in a piece that feels perfectly at home rising from the depths of our October issue.
